Fraser breaks the 7-year title drought


Australia's Marcus Fraser broke a seven-year title drought Sunday, shooting a 3-under 69 to complete a wire-to-wire win with a four-stroke victory in the weather-shortened Ballantine's Championships. Fraser had just one bogey going into final round and added only one more, on the 18th hole. He finished at 12-under 204 at Pinx Golf Club, where the tournament was shortened to 54-holes after fog delayed the first day of play for nearly seven hours.

Jimmy Clausen picked in the second round


Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney spent much of Friday trying to move up in the draft to take Jimmy Clausen, a day after the Notre Dame quarterback was a surprising first-round snub. Hurney couldn't strike a deal, however, and when Arizona traded up to the 47th slot -- one pick ahead of the Panthers -- Hurney acknowledged he was crushed, sure the Cardinals were going to take him.

Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks has been named the NBA's coach of the year after engineering the league's best turnaround. Congrats!

Torry Holt going to the Patriots


The New England Patriots have signed veteran wide receiver Torry Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection who played last season with Jacksonville. Terms of the contract announced Tuesday were not disclosed. Holt had 51 catches for 772 yards in 15 games last season, which included 12 starts. This is a positive signing for the Patriots

Jason Taylor a Jet?


Jason Taylor has signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets, and the former Miami Dolphins star says he's committed to helping his former rivals make a Super Bowl run. Taylor signed the deal Wednesday, a day after agreeing to terms. Taylor said he was hoping for an offer from the Dolphins that never came, and after vacationing in Costa Rica last weekend he decided to join the Jets.

All these teams in it for the NBA Championship.

Big Ben suspended?

A person with knowledge of the decision says Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be suspended for four to six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because the league hasn't announced its decision.

Corey Dillon arrested


Sheriff's deputies say former NFL running back Corey Dillon has been arrested for alleged drunken driving. The 35-year-old Dillon was booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after being pulled over at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Bail was set at $5,000. Other details of his arrest weren't immediately available.

Phil Jackson is fined



Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has been fined $35,000 for publicly criticizing game officials, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

Kyle Boller and the Raiders


The Oakland Raiders signed free agent quarterback Kyle Boller today, adding a former first-rounder to an unsettled quarterback mix. Former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell lost his job midway through last season because of ineffectiveness and is competing with Bruce Gradkowski to get it back. Charlie Frye started three games last season and is also back, but Boller is the one to do the job.

Jerry Rice is taking a swing at professional golf:



HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice is taking a swing at professional golf, and insists it's no publicity stunt.
He will make his pro debut Thursday in a Nationwide Tour event. He also will serve as host of the 156-player tournament, with his foundation receiving proceeds.
The 47-year-old Rice will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. He has been golfing seriously for more than 20 years and has been a regular in pro-ams.
Rice would be eligible for prize money if he makes the 36-hole cut at the Fresh Express Classic at Stonebrae. The Nationwide Tour works under the umbrella of the PGA Tour.

Woods enters US Open


Fresh from his return to golf at last week's US Masters at Augusta National, Tiger Woods has sent in his entry for this years US Open, to be held at Pebble Beach from June 17-20.
